A 'psd' is a Photoshop file. Whenever you save your work in it's unfinished or raw state, the Photoshop software saves it in a 'psd' format.
In the recent past, psds have become synonymous with the term 'colorings' (photo enhancing effects through various adjustment layers) which are saved in the psd format to easily apply the desired photo-effect by simply dragging and dropping the layers onto the image, thus making the photo-shopping experience less complicated.
Saving a file in psd format :
Go to file > Save As (shift+ctrl+S)
select the 'Photoshop (*PSD,*PDD)' option [highlighted in blue]
